weekend report from the ATL

well, for all my bitching, atlanta has started to find ways to endear itself to me. a little bit. but not THAT much. but it was a pretty good weekend.

friday, beat after a week of a section launch and 10-12 hour workdays (but also margaritas and lots of fun in general), i stayed in and started watching season 1 of the wire that tommy burned for me ages ago. everybody i know loves this goddamned show, and dammit if i'm not going to try to get into it as well. and yes, so far, it's excellent. does anyone think it's a possibility that i could actually get through the first three seasons before the season four premiere on september 10? does anyone want to burn me seasons two and three? i think i can do it.

saturday involved a party at a coworkers house where a) i ate the most delicious fajitas i've ever had and b) saw more children than i have since i was working at AMS. and it was freaky. there were babies EVERYWHERE. i was kind of drunk, and kind of simultaneously like, aww, babies, aww, children, OH MY GOD BABIES EVERYWHERE THIS IS MY FUTURE MAYBE AND OH MY GOD CHILDREN SCARY OVARIES NOT READY? but then the evening turned into an indie rock dance fest with babies and children and that was pretty awesome.

post-baby dancefest, l. and i dragged our unwilling male coworker m. to...a jewelry show. at a nearby apartment, a friend of a coworker was hawking her wares, and there was wine also, so, hey! let's go! and actually i thought a lot of the jewelry was really beautiful and i ended up buying two pieces, which i'll photograph later. you can see some of the jewelry here.

sunday was a big ol' trip to the big ol' aquarium with a friend. all the photos are here (and i don't know why, but i love this one). even though the aquarium is the biggest in the world, and they had some lovely beluga whales, which i'm obsessed with, i still somehow prefer the one in baltimore.

later in the evening i met m. for a drink at the flatiron, which is an adorable bar in east atlanta, and where the miracle happened of me giving the waitress $5 for a $4 beer, and her somehow returning $7.25 in change to me. (yes, i gave it back.) we eventually headed over to the earl to catch the clientele. we actually caught the last bit of a set by great lakes, who i thought was AWESOME. it was like this - i'd had a few beers, was feeling pretty good, and i walk in on a band that sounds like an indie lynrd skynrd (which i realize sounds either fabulous or terrible depending on your tastes and how drunk you are). but at that point it was fabulous, and i was immediately like, this is great, and also, who is that lead singer in the plaid button down shirt, I WILL LOVE HIM FOREVER I MEAN HIS MUSIC. unfortunately, almost all the songs i've found by the band this morning kind of suck, so maybe they're just one of those groups who are better seen after three beers in a tiny venue full of sweaty hipsters.

anyway, then the clientele came on, and as i predicted, they were kind of terrible live. they sounded pretty, though. i was actually amazed to find out there's only one guitarist in the band - the lead singer - as they have such an incredibly layered sound. turns out he's an amazing picker and plays all the songs that way, so it basically sounds like you've got two or three guitarists playing along with him. anyway, the best part of it all was when the lead singer (who was rather charming and british, even if the rest of his band was dead boring) thanked snowden for opening, and said, laughing, "and it was great having lynrd skynrd as the middle band as well." so my immediate impression of an indie lynrd skynrd was confirmed. woohoo!

the other good thing about the clientele was that they had moments where the lead singer broke down on the guitar and it was totally radiohead bends-esque, and on the way home, i put that album on and did the thing where you are like, THIS IS WHY THIS IS MY FAVORITE ALBUM EVER. that happens about every 1.5 years with me and that album. it's been a long time since i was a 15-year-old falling asleep listening to "the bends," but it still kicks my ass with its greatness from time to time. and that's nice.

tonight: a braves game! baseball! i'm practically a baseball stadium expert, as this will be the fifth i've been to.
