get it off me

I gotta say, every time I see an ad for this new World Trade Center movie I get really creeped out. Maybe Nick Cage is donating his fee to charity. I really hope so. Because if not, it kind of seems like a case of a movie star using a tragedy (and one of his terrible accents) to pad his bank account and ego.

I understand that people want to make and watch movies about 9-11. I don't count myself among them, but I can comprehend the impulse. But I don't think this is a situation where casting a movie star is appropriate. When things start to matter, movie stars can throw telethons or maybe record some narration. But they need to stay the fuck out of our shared pathos. There's a difference between pretend heroes and real ones, and I think it's extremely distasteful to blur the lines between them.

I know that Cage, having won occasional acclaim for his acting, probably fancies himself a Serious Actor well-suited to this Serious Role. I'm sure he hung out with some firefighters, visited Ground Zero — maybe buried himself under a little rubble. I'm sure he'll talk a lot about "respect" on the junket.

But c'mon — he's still part of America's modern celebristocracy. Consequently, watching him pretend to be a 9-11 firefighter is like watching Kim Jong Il pretend to be a military hero. I'm sure it sucks to be pigeonholed. But when you decide to play Cameron Poe some things come along with it besides just a paycheck and a nagging sense of shame.

ALSO: Check out one prong of their media strategy. What a bunch of scumbags.

i totally have a wanting-to-throw-up reaction every time i see that commercial - but i can't decide if it's because of what you said or cage's beyond-ridiculous moustache. either way, the film creeps me out.

The ads for WTC make me sick which is something the campaign for the other 9/11 did not do (still didn't go see that movie either). The Cameron Poe thing pretty much nails my problem with the movie, which is that the big budget combined with the presence of Cage means that I my mind fills in the rest of the details of the movie as a typical Jerry Bruckheimer production. Ick ick ick.

the other 9/11 movie at least seemed slightly more palatable because it starred total unknowns and seemed interested in being somewhat primarily about actually telling the story of what happened. at least that was my impression. here it's just gross nic cage being gross and wannabe-heroish and fake-valiant and, like, living out some sick vicarious hero dream.

Also, what is Maggie Gyllenhaal thinking about? I'm sure Capps will rush to her defense, but really, why on earth would she need to do this film? Nic Cage I can almost understand -- his career is floundering, plus he's an ego maniac. He could stand to take this kind of risk. But Maggie, she doesn't need to stoop this low.

plus, wasn't she JUST in another 9/11 film? that one with the different vignettes or whatever where she's a cake maker?

If only Mr. Cage would learn that he should play more self-effacing characters, like the Charlie Kaufman role in Adaptation. He was very good there, methought.

Yeah when I first saw the poster for it in a theater I almost gagged. Oliver Stone? Geez. After 'Alexander'? Good luck. And seeing Nic Cage in the previews really is too much to bear.

what's really annoying about that review to me was how she totally out of the blue mentions in the closing paragraph smth like, "oliver stone, who serevd in the army in vietnam, has made a beautiful movie..." like, wtf? why do you need to bring that up now? he served in the army when he was making films you hated. does his having served give this film some sort of authenticity? wtf. i hate her.

I have never seen any footage of 9/11 and I plan on keeping it that way. I have no plans to see this movie.

And Nick Cage's accent annoys me.
