atl folks in the know
[atlanta]
posted by catherine / July 21, 2006 / i'm planning a visit for the next weekend, and i have a question for the more georgia-informed people out there: would it be worth it to make an overnight trip to athens? generally to see the nightlife and stay out and booze, etc. (especially considering in atlanta you have to drive everywhere and somebody ends up limiting themselves to about two drinks.) or would it be better to just take a day trip? or not go at all and do more stuff in atlanta? help!

considering there's nothing all that exciting at the 40 watt next weekend, i'd be inclined to tell you to wait. downtown athens is really quite charming, though, so maybe a day trip would be nice. the roads getting back to ATL are sort of iffy and prone to nighttime accidents during the school year, so if you do decide to stay out, staying over would be a good idea.
heck, it'd be a good idea if only b/c it'd give you a reason to go to the Grit for brunch the next morning!
I say go for it! Since you'll be there, if you have the time, why not go check it out. I've heard great things about Athens, so I can imagine it would be worth the trip.
I consulted my good friend at work, who went to UGA for undergrad...in her opinion, it wouldn't be worth an entire overnight trip when it is non-football season...she said there really isn't anything that great about it on its own, outside of a big football game...(although in the fall the campus is pretty)....one idea she gave me to pass on is a trip to Savannah...specifically, Tybee Island...she said it only took her 3.5 hrs to get there from Atlanta...then you could see the wonderfully charming town of Savannah, and see the beach!
Cyclorama!
Savannah definitely rocks. If you've never been there, I'd choose it over Athens.
yeah I third Savannah, it's really pretty down there!
