to mac or not to mac

huh. maybe i shouldn't buy a mac. TELL ME WHAT TO DO, INTERNETS!

(also: scroll down to the bottom of jake's post for some wonderful news about futurama. or, you know, just click that link. i like to think the fact that tommy and i have seen every rerun of that show at least three times on adult swim has played some small part in its resurrection.)

buy the Mac. Bought my first one (12" iBook) two years ago- I'll never go back. And check out the referbished stuff on the Apple website- just as good, and you can save some serious money...

Yeah, get the Mac. Most of that guy's criticisms are valid, but they aren't (a) universal, or (b) anything seriously wrong with the products themselves. I haven't lifted a MacBook Pro, so I could be wrong, but my 15" PowerBook G4 is eminently portable.

Mac! Mac!

i'm not sure i've ever seen that many straw-man arguments against the mac collected in one place. to be sure, there are legitimate grounds to criticize apple, like the litany of potential quality control issues that are popping up on the portables.

i've had a re-furb'd intel imac for 3 months now with nary a problem.

and by the way, nobody buys a computer that has less than 5% of the market because they're following the crowd.

if you are considering a mac, i say go for it.

I love this from the article:

At this point, Apple has become a purveyor of the same kind of individuality as Urban Outfitters. In other words, thoughtless conformity with a phony uniqueness that really identifies you as, not just part of the crowd but deluded about it as well. I hate the commoditization of individuality (see also: the Gap, MTV, MySpace), and Apple is about as good at convincing its customers that they are expressing themselves as any multi-national syndicate.

For this I pay more?

Not likely.

Uh, maybe that guy hasn't seen the new Apple commercials, which make it patently clear that if you buy a PC, you are a doughy pantload who likes black & white pie charts. Sheesh.

I'm loving being "that guy."

And as I think the post indicates, I'm not exactly opposed to buying a Mac, in principle. Just not any of the ones they've got for sale right now. For example, my only serious criticism of the MacBook is that it's slightly too big for my taste. So your mileage may definitely vary.

One word...widgets! These little buggers will change your life. iPod...easier/iPhoto...easier/everything is easier.

I never thought I would be the person to say Mac over PC but I bought a 17 inch MacBook Pro last month...worth every penny.

I was all set to buy a MacBook until I saw the sweat stains thing. I think I'll wait for Rev. 2.
