posted by catherine / May 09, 2006 / good news! via julie, it appears that the red cross has loosened some of their restrictions regarding who can and cannot donate blood. i was informed a year or two ago that i could never donate blood again because i had lived in europe for a year and could potentially have teh mad cow. and i was sad. but it looks like now, unless i am mistaken, i can donate all the delicious blood that i want. more worrisome: even though i must have donated near ten times now, i can NEVER REMEMBER MY BLOOD TYPE. what's up with that?

I have a friend who will be very happy to hear that. She always gets upset when there is an office blood drive because she was barred from donating for having lived in England for a year...despite being a vegetarian.
you're not the only one Catherine. I can never remember mine either.
Woohoo! I was banned after living in England for a year. Although I went so far as to give blood in England, so maybe they really won't let me.
Mine's a self-help slogan: Be Positive!
I always love some of the questions the Red Cross asks: "Have you had sex with a monkey EVEN ONCE since 1977?" I'm O Positive, by the way. And the answer is NO.
I'm O positive as well, which seems like a total ripoff. So close to having universal donor blood... sigh. I could've been rich.
You know, I have O negative, and I've never been able to find a satisfactory way to sell it. All I get is a constant stream of solicitations in the mail, asking me to donate (for free!). The Red Cross keeps tabs on folks like me, apparently. And if I ever need blood, I'm rather limited in my choices. The only benefit left is that whole "altruism" thing, and that ain't gonna pay the bills.
