posted by tom / April 03, 2006 / Thanks to the insightful commentary of Sommer I know who Yulia Tymoshenko is, if not exactly whether she's one of the good guys or not. Also, I know that I've kind of got a crush on her — one that has only been encouraged by this morning's revelation that she has some of the best campaign posters anywhere.
She's got a pretty strong Buffy aesthetic going on, particularly in the first one. Sure, you might laugh. But keep in mind that there's only a thin barrier of Romanian counties between Ukraine and Transylvania proper. If you lived there, you might also put a high priority on electing somebody who's sold themselves as being tough on vampirism.

I've sent out an e-mail to the usual suspects for the translation of those posters, it appears to be highly colloquial and I'm unable to suss it out. But yeah, Tymoshenko is pretty damn sexy. As far as whether or not she's 'a good guy', it depends on who you ask. I have a friend who is perfectly reasonable who practically foams at the mouth when you mention her. I have another friend who loves her and will probably end up being a speech writer for her should she become PM again. Mostly I think she's a gifted politician, a pretty serious opportunist and probably dangerous for the future of the Ukrainian economy. But I also think if I got to spend an hour with her I'd probably be blushing the whole time and end up kissing her ass because she's just soooo charming and exciting and makes my heart race a little.
Okay, from a Ukrainian friend who really doesn't like her, a description of those posters:
In the sword poster she uses the phrase from the Russian blockbuster "Night Watch", which won't make sense to those who did not see it (it was actually shown in DC last month). It says:
"All go out of the twilight" (and might have a double meaning in Ukr context). In two others she emphasizes 36 since her bloc was listed in the ballot at this number. The line in the second poster with her on a bike says "Forward". I think she is driving on the red light... \
This is how imdb.com describes this "Night Watch":
Among normal humans live the "Others" possessing various supernatural powers. They are divided up into the forces of light and the forces of the dark, who signed a truce several centuries ago to end a devastating battle. Ever since, the forces of light govern the day while the night belongs to their dark opponents. In modern day Moscow the dark Others actually roam the night as vampires while a "Night Watch" of light forces, among them Anton, the movie's protagonist, try to control them and limit their outrage.
so it actually is about vampires!? so, so awesome.
Words aren't enough to describe those creatures who qualify as ballbusters in the former Soviet states (i.e., babyshka), but the Others sounds reasonably close.
