shut it off

posted by catherine / February 06, 2006 / turns out abc was glad to have put a five-second delay on the rolling stone's performance tonight, because...
In "Start Me Up," ABC's editors silenced one word, a reference to a woman's sexual sway over a dead man. The lyrics for "Rough Justice" included a synonym for rooster that the network also deemed worth cutting out.
that is some creative rewriting by the AP reporter right there. i had no idea what in the world they could be talking about when they cited the "sexual sway over a dead man." turns out the lyric is actually (and i did not know this myself) "you make a dead man come."
thank god abc was thinking of the children!
anyway, both the rolling stones and the game sucked. on the other hand, how awesome was grey's anatomy?!

Bomb! In the chest! Damn "to be continued"!
And I was doing so well with my plan to avoid getting hooked on tv shows...
meredith, of course, will be fine...bailey's husband, on the other hand, i am not so sure about.
but that was some good tv. tommy thought the ads for it looked stupid. to him, i say, ppffft.
also tommy should appreciate the fact that every time an ad mentioned the mysterious "code black," we were like, "yup. code black. that's definitely zombies."
Was it just me, or were the commercials during the Superbowl really disappointing this year? How I miss the days of the Bud Bowl...
i didn't think the stones were that bad... the commercials were lame, though. i'm not qualified to comment on the actual football.
apparently there was/will be a song written by Chris Martin and Michael Stipe on Grey's Anatomy.
Christina Ricci was awesome.
1) The Stones were awful. Damn rock zombies! Can't we let them die in peace?
2) The game did not suck. My Steelers won and the gadget plays they did to score on 2 TDs was awesome. The BUS is retiring with a Super Bowl victory. Coach Cowher won his first Super Bowl after many years of close attempts. What more could you ask for? It's a Cinderella story... ok, maybe not.
i wasn't rooting for either team and i don't know anything about football, but can anybody explain to me if, like, 17 bizarre calls by the refs favored the steelers?
Very valley-girl of you to use grammar such as "explain to me if, like, 17 bizarre calls...". Usually this shows up in speech, not in typing. With that said, there were only a few calls that favored the Steelers.
1) 3 inches to 1st down: The Seahawks were only 3 inches from a 1st down after the Ref spotted the ball down during the first quarter. After using the chains, Seahawks came up short and had to punt. Spotting a ball down short by inches is common. I believed no one reached a 1st down until the second quarter.
2) QB touchdown: The first REAL point of contention was Ben Rothlesberger's QB touchdown after faking to Bettis. The play was reviewed without the need for a coach's red flag. After review, the Ref ruled the calling on the field to stand as a touchdown. Although to the Seahawks it looked like the ball never crossed the goal line, this is sort of an illusion. The camera angle that Madden was illustrating from wasn't pointing down the line, but more of across it. This doesn't give the right perception as to where the ball is. Secondly, while Ben was in mid-air, the ball did cross if only slightly. After receiving the block in mid-air, he was pushed back a few inches behind the line to which he subsequently dragged the ball across making it look as if he crossed it after being down. The line judge had a better view and called it a touchdown. I'm sure this is what was discussed with the Ref prior to the review and that's what he looked for.
3) Denied Seahawks touchdown: I forget if it was Jackson or not, but he caught the ball for a touchdown but was then denied it because of a fowl. The reason... illegal pushing against a defender. This was blatant and done right in front of one of the refs. The yellow flag hit the ground before he even caught the ball.
I think these were the major calls that Seahawks fans will contend. However, the Seahawks kicker missed 2 field goal attempts. They also relied heavily on Jackson, Alexander, and Jurivecus to move the ball while the Steelers had more options. Both teams were able to intercept passes and led to another tackle attempt by Rothlesberger (my heart was pounding). You had to admire those Pittsburgh gadget plays, especially the Randle El pass to Ward... straight out of Little Giants (the movie... with Rick Moranis).
If you want to start a conspiracy rumor, how about the fact that there were several Spotlights where the Steelers were holding the trophy and discussing about winning. Not a single Seahawk was spotlighted doing this. Also, the Disney commercial where all the Steelers are practicing "I'm going to Disney World!" was kind of telling. Maybe this was because the Steelers were an East Coast team and the commercials were tailored to this. Anybody live on the West Coast and can tell us if the Spotlights were different?
the spotlights were exactly the same in chicago and we were like, huh, why aren't the seahawks getting their due? it was definitely a little weird.
