the centaurs are coming! the centaurs are coming!

one of the moments that really struck me as absurdly bizarre in last night's SOTU (not that i watched it; just read the transcript) was bush's claim that we need to " to pass legislation to prohibit the most egregious abuses of medical research -- human cloning in all its forms -- creating or implanting embryos for experiments, creating human-animal hybrids and buying, selling, or patenting human embryos."

yes, those pesky half-cats-half-men. for anyone who was as confused as i was when i read that, there's more info on the phenomenon (chimeras) here and here.

UPDATE: kevin drum addressed this earlier.

See, in my world, a Chimera is a soft-box key light used in filmed interviews.

Human-animal hybrids clearly way cooler, though.

On Air America Radio this morning, Stephanie Miller pointed out that humans are in FACT animals (homo sapiens to be exact). Human-animal hybrids are naturally called humans. In fact, humans are mammals and we share a lot in common with other mammals, both behaviorally and genetically.
Despite what the Jesus freaks may believe, we probably descended from apes, who came from smaller apes, who came from rodents, who came from sloths, who came from... the primordial soup! In the end, we are animals and not vegetables or minerals. If scientists want to grow human ears on mice or use pigs to grow human blood, so be it. The animals would do it to us if they could (refer to Orwell's Animal Farm).
If the President wants to stop "human MUTANTS", then I'm all for it. Of course, he's not going to go on television and declare his intention of stopping mutants (without some snickers from the audience). Especially not with X-Men 3 coming in a few months. And I'd probably stop a human zombie initiative. Hasn't Resident Evil, 28 Days Later, and Shawn of the Dead shown us that the human zombie threat is the ultimate danger to our existence. Somebody please draft some zombie legislation!
