posted by catherine / January 31, 2006 / i found this washington post article about a small town in utah that supports bush nearly 100% simultaneously highly entertaining and highly condescending. basically, no one comes out of the piece - not the happily ignorant town residents, not the incredibly pompous-sounding author - looking good. i was especially bothered by the author's attitude that seemed to say that these people are not really living worthwhile lives.
how is anyone supposed to make people in a utah town of under 500 care about national and international issues? i'm not even sure that you can. but you probably shouldn't start with articles like this one.

you know, at least they ignorantly support SOMEONE. Randolph is approx. 4 hours from where I lived in ID; I dare anyone from DC to sit down with a bunch of 19 year-old rural ID /UT ranch kids during an election year. They will look at you like you just grew a third freaking head when you ask who they're voting for. It might just kill you. The entire concept of voting at all is beyond foreign to them.
Even if someone actually said that, I wouldn't have quoted it. No one talks like that except Jayson Blair.
