witty women

posted by catherine / January 30, 2006 /

this study says that men find women who are witty to be a total turn-off.

guys: is this true? i would suspect that many of the guys who read this blog would say no, simply because i think most of the male readers here are the kind that appreciate humor and wit in a woman because they aren't insecure ninnies. but maybe not.

the article interviews a lot of female comedians about the study, but i don't think they should count as i find most stand up comedians to be kind of repulsive whether they're male or female. but seriously - if you met a woman out at a bar who could keep up a stream of hysterical repartee don't you think most people would consider that to be a turn on? or would it be seriously offputting? i mean, i just dunno. i don't see anyone throwing sarah silverman out of bed.

I'm sure what that study indicates is that many men get scared off by women who betray their intelligence. But wit is a prerequisite for me and most of the guys I know who've progressed beyond high school sophistication.

teofilo - as soon as i posted this, i thought of that thread. oh well, who cares, ogged's all gone and shit! screw him! sniff...

jake - that's pretty much what i figured, i mean insofar as the intelligence factor comes into play. but the more i think about it, the more i recall having seen it happen amongst my colleagues: witty, smart and funny women being taken on as friends by guys who in turn seem to go romantically for the sweet-but-bland type. i dunno.

I'm sure there's some truth to it, but it's kind of tough to make these sorts of blanket pronouncements. How are we measuring wit? The criterion seems to be how many jokes someone cracks. And let's face it -- most people aren't very funny. OTOH, it's relatively easy to find appealing someone who'll listen to your jokes.

i don't count it as jokes. nobody tells good jokes, as far as i'm concerned. wit, i think, is just bantering back and forth instead of sitting there giggling at what somebody says.

Yeah, it's definately distinct from joke-telling, it's more along the lines of having a quick mind. I find it very attractive in a woman, my latest crush is due largely to the fact that the person in question is very witty. I'm a sucker for it.

Catherine has obviously never heard me tell a joke.

you know jokes?

Do I ever.

tell us one!

All I know is that I definitely have a crush on Amy Poehler. And I would not, in fact, kick Sarah Silverman out of bed. So I would disagree with the study.

Ditto to all that. Verbal quickness is hott.

Coming from a guy that dated a girl because she said she could beat me at Scrabble.

I wouldn't say that guys are scared off when I make a semi-witty comment. It's more that I'll say the semi-witty phrase and they will look surprised that I have some/any sort of intellect. That is a huge turn-off for me (and makes me think that they, in fact, are the un-witty ones) so I'm usually evil toward them until the conversation ends. Could be overanalyzing just a tad though.
