phew
praise be! thank the cinephile god for dave white, who not only writes a hysterical listing of the top 10 best worst movies of 2005, but also includes "crash" amongst them. i thought i had entered a parallel universe after finally renting this movie at the beginning of december and not coming out it with anything more than the very nuanced concept that "racism is bad" and "hollywood can fix this!" but it was so difficult to simultaneously know that EVERYBODY ELSE IN THE WORLD that i remotely respect thought it was a layered, brilliant film. lord. white, does not so much:
"Crash" - Kids, racism is really really really bad and wrong. Look, just watch this heavy, important movie about how everyone who lives in Los Angeles -all 12 of them - is super racist and awful. There. Did you watch it and pay very close attention? Good. Do you now understand the message? Because if you don't then you're going to have to watch it again. With Oprah. She thinks it's as good as "Citizen Kane." She said so on her show. Why you should see it anyway: Because it's really funny when Hollywood decides to tackle a serious moral issue and throw star-powered weight behind something that everyone but Neo-Nazis agrees on already. To ice the Let's Pat Ourselves on The Back Cake, they'll probably give it Oscar too. I know the scene where Racism pushes Sandra Bullock down a flight of stairs deserves some kind of award.

i like crash
I also liked Crash, but I saw it on a plane, so my expectations bar for the film was set somewhere around: "Is it better or worse than Monster-in-Law?"
i mean as a movie i actually liked crash alright - the acting was pretty good and it wasn't a bad story. but what really annoyed me was everyone was like, this movie is SO DEEP and captures modern race issues with SO MUCH COMPLEXITY (and i thought the movie thought this of itself as well) when i really thought it was a very simplistic, easy treatment of race. but no, overall it wasn't a bad movie.
i like monster-in-law
Let's be honest, how many people on here are white? To you, racism is something that happens to other people. In this PC world, everyone knows that racism is bad... but do we do anything to remedy the situation. I don't expect a movie to solve the problem of racism, but I do expect it to bring some critical thinking about the subject. Dave White makes a trivial argument that racism is a no-brainer in the movie. He's slightly off in his review...
And let's not talk about fattists... the worst of the "haters".
i really wouldn't take my fattist thing very seriously. i couldn't care less if my friends are over or underweight (unless it is enough to seriously affect their health) but i most likely wouldn't date somebody who was overweight. this is not just so much for physical attraction reasons as it says that we wouldn't be compatible - i like running, biking, going to the gym, hiking, etc, and i would want somebody to join me in those activities.
Some people are overweight despite their exercise habits.
Why don't you try looking at the world with an open mind sometime, cathy?
i'll start looking at it with an open mind when other people do!
and don't call me cathy.
i mean, there are plenty of people out there who don't have issues with dating overweight people, and i don't mean to offend anybody. but it's just my list. i'm not terribly offended that i am explicitly crossed off apo's and ogged's lists for several reasons.
FYI... I have a very twisted sense of humor. That last line was meant to provoke a laugh or two. I didn't expect Catherine to defend herself as vigorously as she has (3 or 4 posts). I was trying to slyly cover 2 blog posts with one stone.
Unfortunately with this site I can't use my infamous "sarcasm" and "wit" markers because they don't get parsed. When in doubt, take it as a joke from a very bad, bad, man.
yeah, there should be a sarcasm symbol for when it's not clear.
Okay, so I finally read the linked article. Not only is David White an a-hole trying to be funny... he's also a fatty. Just thought I'd clear that all up.
And to clear up any confusion about that last statement, not all fatties are a-holes. Again, just trying to be clear.
PS: Smear everything above with "humor implied", "sarcasm", "witty banter"... just in case there are any huge David White fans (which I doubt).
catherine,
It's OK to say you find certain things attractive or unattractive. That's called personal preference.I am not very upset by someone's indivdual prefernces or even prejudices in their personal lives.i only get bothered when
their official personae act upon those feelings.
