Tonight we buy the booze. This is tricky: how many people are too cool to use evite? How many will decide to come at the last minute? And how much will everyone drink? In the past we've budgeted around 4 drinks per person and done pretty well — everyone is generally pretty far over or under that number, but it averages out. But it's hard to say how much of that is owed to planning and how much is thanks to fortuitous booze delivered at the last minute by gifts of wine, roving gangs of Latvian friends, and lucky Budweiser truck accidents. It might be time to bump our allocation up.

The restaurant where Charles works is donating a case of PBR, but at the moment that's all the serendipohol we're counting on. Good rules of thumb are welcome. Also, if anyone has developed a serious drinking problem over the past year, let us know in comments

38 evite people say they are coming, though i'm looking at the not yet responded list and see at least 5-6 who will probably also show up (btw, i evited the ghost of gordon sumner, because he is the only d.c. area blogger person we have not converted into a real life friend yet, and yes, ghost, i am now calling you out). i would guesstimate 50 at the most, but spread out over the evening. if they come too late for the booze and are not latvians, well, i think there are some remnants of the Great Vodka Experiment left under the sink.

"Serendipohol" is officially the Word of The Year.

Don't some fair percentage of the guests usually bring some bottles of beer or wine? This has been my experience and it usually means that I over-allocate for drinks and end up with a supply for the next few months of solo drinking.

I actually was about to send you an email about this, Tom. Through twist of fate, people threw down far too much money on Sunday at the meet-up thing ($150 for a $70-something tab, IIRC), making any possible contribution of mine incredibly superfluous. So I'm more than happy to pay back in beer/wine/liquor/food, let me know what you could use.

I'm half-Latvian (but not a member of the roving band of Latvians), I'll bring beverages of some sort.

don't sweat bringing stuff, guys -- this wasn't meant as a bleg, just as an excuse to type the phrase "roving gangs of latvians". Any contributions will be appreciated, but I assure you that they're unnecessary.

I just maybe'd the evite... I'm going to a holiday party at 6, so I don't know if you'll want me in your house by 10. And now I don't know why I felt compelled to make this comment... like sending you an email to tell you I left you a voicemail.

I'm planning on stealing booze from the N's office party prior to showing up.

That's not really because you need it so much as because I feel like stealing something.

Posted by: the g. on December 15, 2005 05:30 PM

rcr, of course we want you in our house by 10! even if you are shit faced! all the better.

and g.: rock on with the booze stealing. totally endorsed.

I've got another party as well, but I can't miss yours no way no how. Now to plan the prime back and forth time between the two...

ah, booze stealing. it's the greatest. personally, i made off with two bottles of scotch from "emergency back-up office party" this afternnon, and will be putting both to good use on Saturday night.

Posted by: lance on December 15, 2005 06:58 PM

man, your office is a lot cooler than mine was. the most i ever made off with was a couple of bottles of sam adams. sigh.

I'll be at Tomcat's tonight, but I'm not sure I'll stick it out to the hour at which the gay porn makes its appearance.

So, if I admit I have developed a drinking problem, do I get extra booze or an intervention?

So people are calling this thing TomCat now? I also saw the phrase over at Information Leafblower. Well let me state here for the record that I hate all of you.

Posted by: Charles on December 16, 2005 01:37 PM

Aww, don't be blue, Charles in Charge.

Posted by: Kriston on December 16, 2005 02:19 PM

TomCat! TomCat! TomCat!

Posted by: information leafblower on December 16, 2005 03:49 PM

Sommer included me as a host for the party, so she is now my best friend.
