a decision has been made

posted by tom / October 07, 2005 / Well, almost. Dell home has the Canon SD400 for $263; they've also got the SD300 for $206. They're both very tiny and are supposed to take pretty good pictures. The difference seems to be a megapixel and perhaps some very slight image quality differences. I think that's enough of a reason for the splurge, although if anyone feels strongly that I'd be better off blowing that $60 on videogames, please let me know.
UPDATE: I pulled the trigger, and an SD400 should be winging its way to me shortly. And yeah, I went with Dell, despite the warnings. It's true that I've been through lengthy waits getting my orders in the past, but that's the worst Dell-related headache that I've encountered. And I'm not in any hurry.

I'm pretty sure that you can't control shutter speed or aperture on these. If you don't care about that, they're great cameras.
You might want to check ebay as well... I got my camera for an excellent price, brand new and bundled with a camera bag, mini tripod, extra memory card and a few other doo-dads.
yeah, I noticed that in the review, ogged. I donno. I would like to be able to control depth of field, but the odds of my using it very often are pretty low -- I mainly need a digicam to provide grist for photoshop.
Someday when I'm old and need a hobby I'll blow some money on a digital SLR. For now I think I can be satisfied with point-and-shoot.
The SD400 also has USB 2.0 compared to 1.1 on the SD300... I wouldn't recommend buying from Dell though, they have some serious order processing problems...Newegg looks like the most reliable and least expensive place to get one right now
