u-haul sucks

posted by catherine / September 29, 2005 /

jake reminds me of a simple fact that any savvy consumer should know: u-haul sucks, and it will bite you in the ass if you reserve a truck from them. you will, without doubt, get screwed over one way or another. jake cites this story. mr. loops offers this seemingly-common tale of u-haul desertion. when i was moving, i spoke with my friend becca about her move from north carolina to d.c. and how the tire on her u-haul trailer blew out, and how u-haul proceeded to strand her on the side of I-95 for EIGHT HOURS and DIDN'T EVEN WANT TO PAY FOR HER TIRE REPLACEMENT UNTIL SHE FOUGHT IT.

if i can do one good in the world, it can be the promotion of how terrible u-haul is - how they lack any compassion, any organization, any halfway-modern trucks, any semblance of customer service. yet, they never seem to go away, and the complaints about them have been going on for years. what's the deal here? why do they remain so popular? how have better companies like budget not totally snapped up their share of the market?

i don't know. but i do know one thing: we, as the ALL IMPORTANT BLOGGERS, must work tirelessly to change it. screw u-haul!

Martin and I had few problems with U Haul, but then again we only moved a sum total of about seven blocks.

This two parter is a cringeworthy U-Haul tale.

Well, at least it's good to know that at least I saved some money a couple years ago when I rented a truck from Budget (instead of U-Haul) to move from Nebraska to Oregon.

The truck broke down in the middle of Wyoming, and I spent a day and a half in Cheyenne while it was (kind of) fixed. I was then instructed that I could continue to Oregon, but I should try to stay under 50 mph so the truck wouldn't overheat anymore. Ha! You know how long that takes? No apology, no refund, nothing.

The sad story is: ALL RENTAL COMPANIES SUCK ASS. We recently had a horror story in NC with Enterprise, who asked that we find a mechanic and have the tire fixed ourselves, and then submit an expense report to them for reimbursement.

The next time you're screwed by a rental car company, do this: go buy a pound of raw shrimp right before you return the car, and bury those bastards behind the dashboard, in the heat/ac ducts, or inside an interior panel. Stinky.

UHaul does indeed suck. I had to live in a towel and sheet free world for 5 days after graduating college because those jerks didn't have the truck I'd reserved. I hates them. And Ikea. I hate Ikea.

Rented a truck from UHaul once and the brakes started to die on the expressway. We pulled over for a bit, then decided to exit to a service station, but the battery was dead.

The shrimp, however, were delicious. Thanks, Tom O.!

Didn't people get the memo about this? There was also an infomercial. And blimps. Airplanes with big banners reading "u-haul sucks big donkey balls" were chartered to fly over most American beaches.

Seriously, who the hell still gives those assclowns money? It's like replying to Nigerian spammers, but ten-fold worse.

NEVER USE U-HAUL - GO TO PENSKE!!!!! I wish I would've found this website before I rented a U-haul truck in August to move from Alabama back to North Carolina. I knew I had a problem when we went to pick up our 14' truck at a banjo strumming, deliverance country gas station. We had to walk through knee high weeds to get to it. As soon as we pulled out of the station (I was following the truck driven by my husband in my vehicle) I almost hit him because all tail lights were out, including brake lights and hazards. The A/C was also broken which is particularly awesome while trying to move a two-year old 415 miles in August in the deep south. I stayed on hold w/ U-Haul for hours trying to get a new truck. The many different rep's I spoke with had the shittiest attitudes I've ever encountered. They would not do ANYTHING to help me. They wouldn't give me a new truck or fix the truck I had. Their attitude was basically "Screw you...we're U-Haul and we just don't care." They even went so far as to tell me that if I left the truck on the side of the road broken down, they would charge me an additional $300 for "abandonment." They seemed really proud of this spectacular policy. When all was said and done, my move was delayed, we drove a truck that was not road legal, dangerous and also very, very hot. I called Penske in the midst of all this about a replacement truck. Not only were they helpful and didn't keep me on hold for hours, but the cost was about $380 total w/ unlimited mileage vs. the $550 I had the pleasure of paying U-Haul. I hate U-Haul. They need to be put out of business. Don't ever bother with them. Hire donkeys to pull your stuff on a cart. You'll get to where you're going faster and more safely. If that doesn't work, than try Penske. I wish I had.
