episode 2

posted by catherine / September 28, 2005 /

i realize that last week i was probably unnecessarily harsh on the season premiere of lost, seeing as how everyone else and their grandma regarded it as manna from heaven. and when i watched the repeat tonight, right before the new episode, it definitely seemed better. that said...

i still had my issue's with tonight's episode. primarily? it just seemed to waste so much time. i can see the merits of replaying the whole hatch/desmond episode from locke and kate's point of view if we had really learned anything new, except, um, we didn't. except that kate got tied up, ate a lot of rationed chocolate bars, and was crawling in a vent when jack came in. so much of that stretch of the show was so nearly the same as last week's that it just seemed pointless. the moments that locke and desmond had together revealed next to nothing; the dialogue contained nothing meaningful. it was all like, put down that gun! who are you?! don't make a sound! etc.

the raft scenes, though, i thought were pretty good (though it didn't necessarily strike me as realistic that the two would be bitching at each other so much. HELLO YOU NEED TO LIVE, work together for fuck's sake and sacrifice each other to tigerheads later). for those three seconds that it appeared michael might have shot and killed sawyer instead of the shark, that was it. i was ENDING MY CONTENTIOUS RELATIONSHIP WITH JJ. but phew. sawyer lives. even while bleeding all over the place and digging a bullet out of his own arm. as for the michael/mother/walt flashbacks, they were touching (especially the part with little walt; he was so effing cute i wanted to roll him up into a little ball and eat him, and did you notice that his dad gave him a stuffed POLAR BEAR?! HUH!) but again frustrated me as they really did little to reveal any more plot points or character motivation. we ALREADY knew michael was somehow unreasonably devoted to walt (though he barely knew him) and that walt had gone abroad with his mom. maybe this gave us a tiny bit more insight and details, but i don't really think it was enough to warrant having been the major flashback that it was.

anyway, with all my bullcrap annoyances out of the way, let's get on to the theorizing...

the preview showed the others. so, um, like, what are the others? small point, eh? are they a long-ago plane crash crew who's turned wild?

why did walt say "press the button, no button's bad"? did he mean the button on the ancient computer?

wtf is up with desmond? what's he afraid of catching? the same thing that rousseau was talking about that killed her son and crew?

and, most pressing, WHY THE FUCK is there so much electricity on this desert island?

My Theories

Others = descendants of the crew and cargo of The Black Rock, plus whoever they have absorbed (brainwashed?) from the various scientific/military missions that have gotten stranded on the Island

Sickness Desmond is worried about = radiation poisoning. He didn't just ask if anyone on the Island had gotten sick, when Locke and Kate mentioned the plane travelling from Sydney to LA he said, "So the world's still out there?"

Walt's message = reference to some future incident we have yet to see, where Shannon will be confronted with a Big Red Button of some sort and have to decide whether to press it. Whatever Locke was doing on that old computer with The Numbers, it's the same thing Desmond has apparently been doing every 108 minutes for months and months and months.

Did anyone catch the polar bear toy? Flash back to Walt's comic book--- polar bears.

If you read the latest Rolling Stone, they mention that this season we'll be meeting some survivors from the tail section of the plane. Their deal is supposedly that their smaller numbers forced them into a more feral, tribal "society", instead of the big hippy love-in up at the caves. So thats probably who we saw there at the very end of the episode.

AND! if you watch the torrent, skip to ~34 1/2 minutes in. The shark has a symbol on its tail that's identical to the one on Desmond's jumpsuit and all the food containers. Clealry the island is a Jurassic Park-style for profit venture which went horribly horribly wrong. Jurassic Park-style.

Going with the shark, the thing I like about this show is the attention to detail.

At the end of last week's episode when Jack is in the 'biodome' and staring that computer, you can barely hear Kate screaming.

Maybe it was a rear surround only affect, but when I heard it I couldn't figure out what it was with that damn music playing.

The next episode explained it. I still have some hope that the show's not a wild goose chase ... let's see how the Others/new cast members can keep up the tension.

hmm... i should probably read everyone else's comments in previous posts before i go talking about shark-related discoveries. ohwell.
