moving bleg
can anybody suggest a good moving service? i had previously thought that i would merely rent a uhaul and drive it out to chicago come september, but that option is looking less attractive (and more expensive) than i thought.
i'm constantly reading stories about people who get screwed over by moving companies, so any personal experience you've had would be good to hear. grazie!

basically, they all suck

but doing most of the packing yourself is a good way to cut down on problems. boxes and paper are cheap, filing out insurance claims takes way too much time.
contact the school and see who they use to move new faculty.
I am shortly doing the same thing, except leaving Chicago. Look in the yellow pages, not online, and see how many, if any, complaints are on file at the chamber of commerce/BBB relative to how long they've existed, try to find out, if they'll be using local companies, what companies those will be, get an estimate as locked down as possible.
Set a fire to most all of your belongings because...frankly you'll find yourself with boxes a year from now that you haven't even unpacked and thus never needed in the first place.
You should pack yourself. I had Mayflower and Cor-o-van come out and do an estimate. Cor-o-van's estimate was a "this is the most you will pay", while Mayflower's was "if we are within 10% you'll pay this". It's all be weight and it's strictly regulated wrt to price, so it all comes down to the estimate. But, I would pack up boxes myself and not let them do it.
Another option is the services that drop off a portable storage unit; you fill it up and they bring it to wherever you're moving and drop it off. It's cheaper than movers, but, unless you are a master packer, it won't be packed as well as the pros.
Hasn't Tommy invented matter transportation yet? Slacker.
