problematically good

posted by tom / June 17, 2005 / Wal-mart and other digital photo printers are starting to refuse service to folks whose photos are deemed to look too professional; they're worried about infringing professionals' copyrights when folks download photos from the net and head to walmart for a cheap reprint. Better watch out, Matt.

shiiiiiit, i used to work in a wal-mart photolab. i'm sure the "too professional" photos are your standard senior portrait or wedding shots. it's pretty obvious when someone walks in with something from olan mills. the studios retain the reproduction rights on those pictures so that they can actually make money off them. it's wal-mart's deep-pocketed ass that will get sued if they print them on their equipment, so for once i empathize with the big, evil corporation.
for the almost nonexistent fraction of the population who own studio equipment but still get their prints made at fucking wal-mart, i guess this is a problem. although, in the cases where a photographer signs over reproduction rights, a simple signed release from the artist would usually convince the pimply kid behind the counter that everything's legit.
