why didn't he just release them earlier?

WASHINGTON -- Senator John F. Kerry, ending at least two years of refusal, has waived privacy restrictions and authorized the release of his full military and medical records.

The records, which the Navy Personnel Command provided to the Globe, are mostly a duplication of what Kerry released during his 2004 campaign for president, including numerous commendations from commanding officers who later criticized Kerry's Vietnam service.

The lack of any substantive new material about Kerry's military career in the documents raises the question of why Kerry refused for so long to waive privacy restrictions. An earlier release of the full record might have helped his campaign because it contains a number of reports lauding his service. Indeed, one of the first actions of the group that came to be known as Swift Boat Veterans for Truth was to call on Kerry to sign a privacy waiver and release all of his military and medical records.

But Kerry refused, even though it turned out that the records included commendations from some of the same veterans who were criticizing him.

maybe somebody suggested to him that responding in any way would just prolong the SVFT controversy. looks stupid now, but if he had released them it probably would have been met with cries that he forged them. you can't argue with those people -- they're liars and thugs.

Or maybe it wasn't politically motivated one way or the other. Maybe he thought his records were nobody's damned business and was standing on principle.

I'm with Tom and JSB. I understand (in hindsight) why he didn't do it then, but I can't figure out why he's doing so now.

Maybe he is senile and his money-hungry family encouraged him to release the records so they could get a book deal.

you supported the SBV, and now you think kerry might have been standing on principle?
really. i can only imagine the bullshit you and others would have come up with if he did release his records back then.

Yeah, here's the NY Times article regarding his grades. Tom, you can fix the link.

you supported the SBV

I supported letting them air their grievances. I thought you supported the first amendment... At least we didn't have to MAKE UP fake documents like "you and others" came up with. Please...let's...move on.

you called their ads "devastating" and said they were "nothing but net." that, to me, implies that you believed and supported the things they said.

It's a little known fact that Catherine is Dan Rather. What's the frequency, Tommy?
