And your take on League of Extraordinary Gentlemen? As another girl who was recently prodded into reading it by a friendly GeekBoy, I'm curious. I couldn't get into it at all. (The Sandman books were good, though.)
i really liked it! it's got lots of fun victorian literature allusions and the plot moves along really quickly. the style of the drawings and the detail are really great, too. of course, parts i didn't like included the nasty, gory violence and some of the treatments of women, but for my first comic book i was pleasantly surprised.
The second volume -- though it gets off to kind of a confusing start -- is also good. The treatment of women is generally better, the "chin up" mentality of Brits is mocked mercilessly, and there are aliens. Aliens are awesome.
Thanks for the input! Maybe I'll give the second book a try -- he gave me both at the same time. Sounds like it resolves many of my issues (like the treatment of women thing and being less confusing).
I've read more graphic novels than I care to admit. I'm always a sucker for GeekBoys and their enthusiasm about things like this. When they ask me to read the latest comic/watch a cheesy movie/hear their latest theory on marginal tax rates, I have a hard time saying no. They share because they care.
Hmm. I bought and read the second volume last night -- gotta say, I wasn't as impressed with it as I was with the first one. Some good bits, to be sure, but I was hoping for more of a payoff on the various plotlines they set up in the first.
Oh, and some panels of the invisible man smoking without his jacket and wrappings on. Or is that idea so overdone as to not be worth drawing?
