okay, i'm admittedly in a pretty bad mood today (at work at 8am, working nonstop all day including a lot of physical labor which my delicate lithe body cannot handle; the only bright spot so far was meeting tommy at galileo's again for another awesome grill sandwich) but i just have to bitch about a very petty and minor subject of annoyance. and that would be certain comments on DCist.

i love most of the comment threads on DCist; they're incredibly helpful and can draw on enormous collections of resources and thoughts. they're great. you can find out recommendations for cafes, record stores, concerts, etc. i like it because i don't think we try to pretend like we know everything about the city, and commentors can fill in gaps in what we say with their great insight and wisdom about specific areas.

that said, we get some TOTAL PIG FARKER people leaving nasty comments all over the site. they are like our total unwanted self-appointed-yet-unwanted-ombudsman-holier-than-thou commentors who leave at least three or four negative comments a week that don't even pretend to offer up constructive criticism; they just try to be the most pointedly clever and acerbic comments of the day (that are very rarely clever or funny or relevant). i don't know if they get off by feeling that they're really better than DCist or cooler than it or what, but the hell? yes, we get 7-8,000 readers a day, and we're putting ourselves out there, so this is bound to happen. i accept that. but if you hate the site, then DON'T FRIGGIN READ IT! or, if you really think you have ideas to help us be a better blog, then, you know, state them in a way that will actually help us and not make me want to cut off your tiny balls and shove them in your eardrums!

anyway, i realize the pointlessness of my venting, but i'm still going to bitch vociferously. because that is what i do. and i am SO buying like six bottles of wine on the way home tonight. i obviously could use some alcohol.

Could you mayhap be talking about a certain crunchilicious avian? He's one in particular I have some issues with. Even worse: when they are anonymous. To echo one of your earlier sentiments from today, cockpunch.

I hadn't heard about this edition. I've got a pretty full schedule planned of going home, lying down and whining about my back, so I, at least, will be missing it.

Welcome to the Internet.

That sucks. I know you probably think I'm a retard, but I really love reading this blog. I don't read DCist because I don't find it as interesting as the personal lives of Tom and yourself. But this blog is extremely entertaining. It totally adds to the quality of my life. Perhaps sad, but true.

If you want to read something funny check out this fictional (i hope) blog about a guy that is stuck in rehab with Pat O'Brien:

While you're at it check out http://drinkyeroil.blogspot.com/ the 'If I had a hammer entry' is a f'ing hilarious political type rant.

aw, thanks. oh well - it's not even a big deal, and i'm just being retarded. but i was in a bad mood and something was gonna get a rant.

kriston - i think i'm staying in tonight. the blogorama thing looks cool but i really need a bottle of wine or two on the balcony.

I'm an anonymous pig farker that leaves nasty comments. Can I be of assistance?

[constructive criticism]
BTW, slashdot solves this problem with a moderation system. Unfortunately, DCist doesn't get enough comments for it to really work.

I also think it's a waste of mental energy to take anything on the internet too seriously.

And if you haven't already, I invite self-appointed-ombudsmen to post on my blog.

Do another update on good music. You have good taste, and I'm bored with my collection.

Posted by: Mark on April 7, 2005 06:17 PM

oh, it's fine. i mean, i should be happy people are reading and commenting at all, right? i was just in a snit for a while.

mark - i'll try the music thing later on, maybe. i have to say though that i think so many new bands are just TERRIBLE! i've been listening to a lot of old stuff lately. maybe i'll make a spring playlist.

My "favorite" comments are the ones that say "what does this have to do with DC?"

DCist is a website about the Washington, D.C. area and everything that happens here.

Surprisingly, people in DC actually do some normal things that aren't DC related. I know it is shocking, but it happens sometimes.

P.S. I hate that moveable type doesn't let you cut and paste easily...problem code sucks.

Sort of makes you wonder how people and other sites feel when you slam them. Or do you not think about such things when you're the one doing the bashing?

Posted by: Karmababy on April 10, 2005 03:11 PM

well, karmababy, if you'd be so kind as to a) not be anonymous and b) explain if you have a specific example in mind, i could better respond. however i don't believe that i have ever tried to tell a blog author that his site sucks and leave comments saying he should change the content in such a way that my criticism is nothing but snarky. i do often argue with other blogs' points of view or frame an argument in relation to what i believe about another blog, but i don't think i've slammed anybody. well, michael chiarello. and maybe michelle malkin.
