baby, it's cold outside
so. it's been cold outside, huh? the kind of cold that freezes the interior contents of your nose into a crystallized fountain pouring down your upper lip; the kind of cold that makes you tear up, except you don't know you've teared up, because the liquid your eyes are emanating in response to the extreme polar weather has actually glued your eyelids together; the kind of cold that causes somebody who has never in fact lived above the mason-dixon line to whine unendingly on her blog.
and it was during the first real cold weekend of the year that i had an altogether wonderful time, despite the fact that i had to wear, like, sneakers and sweaters and scarves instead of flipflops and the slutty tank tops that i like to characterize my days off work. ah well. we all make sacrifices.
friday night i joined several lovely friends who came together to accompany me to the helix lounge and buy me many a $10 martini for my birthday. i really did like helix; although i first felt severely out of place in the bar, which is unrelentingly hip and white and glowy with pink and purple lights, we eventually settled in, found seats, and chatted the night away. i guess it's a testament to my enormous age that i remember most of the night. i'm suddenly all responsible and not drinking till i pass out and die and shit. it's amazing.
anyway, here are some unbearably hip pictures:

post-helix we came back and devoured the delicious ice cream cake tommy had bought me:

i like this picture. i have no idea what the hell i am doing (making googly lover eyes at the cake? trying unsuccessfully to hide my andrews family potbelly?), but i do look kinda voguey.
saturday night i went out with charles to dc9, where we met up with kanishka and audrey. we were there to see local band monopoli. you can see my 'formal' review of the show here at DCist.com.
my first impression of monopoli was not very favorable. they had a few interesting songs, but overall i found their performance to be pretty dull. it wasn't that they fell into the "all-the-songs-sound-the-same" trap; actually, their songs were pretty distinct and a few had good hooks. the lead singer was charismatic, and the band members seemed to know what they were doing. but all the songs were SO GODDAMNED MIDTEMPO. i like sets to have a bit of varying beats. you know, mix it up. play some rockers. this was like, sit down and have a glass of wine whilst leaning against some pillows and really appreciating the music. maybe it was my expectations that soured the night for me, but i had really thought monopoli would be a little more exciting.
but after downloading all the mp3s they have available on their web site, i'm definitely more into their music. if i had to do the thing where you describe a band solely by comparing it to other bands, i'd say they're kind of a coldplay+jump, little children, minus the more rockin songs of the latter. the thing is, i feel they absolutely DO have the talent to do more interesting upbeat/rocker songs, so i don't understand why they don't turn it up a notch. anyway, it was good to check them out. plus, going to their show had the added bonus of witnessing the band delegate, who got pimped on stereogum today. i'm all with the trends, yo.
sunday evening, tommy and i took advantage of the last night of restaurant week and went to ceiba. and my god, was it fantastic. this is what we had (citing verbatim from the online menu listing because i was too busy orgasming over the food to remember what any of it was called):
tommy: appetizer, "West Indies Conch Chowder, Sweet Corn Johnnycake, Dark Rum, Outerbridges Sherry Pepper Sauce"
entree - Crab-encrusted Tilapia with a Tortilla Sauce
dessert: Bread Pudding
catherine: appetizer, "Cuban Black Bean Soup; Ham and Manchego Cheese Croquetta, Pickled Red Onions, Latin Crema"
entree, "Blackened Yellowfin Tuna, Coconut Shrimp, Fufu Mash, Curried Costa Rican Pineapple Tapioca"
dessert, Flan Tradicional, Almond Crisp and Cajeta Cream
we also had two glasses of white wine and two cocktails, and the entire bill came to just under $100. god bless restaurant week.
anyway. all in all, a pretty great d.c. weekend. what did you do?

Yup, this is Proper January Weather. The problem is, now I remember why I *hate* January!
Holy crap! is it ever cold here! As Toby put it yesterday, "It's so cold, it warranted a hearty laugh." It's that friggin cold. I can't remember when I felt this cold.
Reminds me of a time in college (Middle of PA. VERY cold) where my roommate came home with her scarf frozen to her face. She had her head wrapped and her breath and its moisture froze the scarf to her face. Chapped her up real good. :] Poor gal.
I am just going to stay inside until April.
