sideways
goddamn, "sideways" is on one hell of a streak. it seems i barely heard about this movie before it received, oh, EVERY AWARD EVER THAT'S NOT AN OSCAR. named best picture by the Los Angeles Film Critics Association, best actor, supporting actress, picture, screenplay at the new york film critics circle [jerk] awards, and it led the pack at the golden globes with seven nominations.
in case you haven't heard of sideways, it's written and directed by alexandrer payne (who did "about schmidt"), it stars paul giamatti, and IMDB describes it thusly:
Miles Raymond, a failed writer and divorcé who teaches junior high school english takes his best friend, former hot actor Jack on a weeklong drive up to California's wine country. There they explore the nature of their failures and question their relationships. Jack, about to get married, has an affair with a woman and wonders whether he should call off his wedding. Miles questions whether or not he made the right choice while trying to form a relationship with the woman's best friend, a fellow onephile who is a waitress at a restaurant that he frequents often when visiting that part of the country.
i think there are many reasons we should go see this movie. a) it is about wine. b) we can probably sneak in a few flasks of wine to drink while watching it.
what? isn't that enough?

Schmidt was partly hilarious, partly depressing and uncomfortable. I imagine this will be more of the same. But I like the wine drinking idea. I think I'll do that and skip the movie.
I wasn't a huge fan of About Schmidt. It had one or two hilarious moments, but was mostly just a depressing slog. I guess there's a place for that, but laments about wasting your life as a cog in the machine don't really suit my temperament very well.
yeah man, i'd rather see The Dukes of Hazzard driving their car off a cliff, clambering out through the windows and, as the car hurtles to the sea and smashes into the Pirates of Dark Water, Uncas and Long Rifle perform expert half-gainers, tuck themselves, then explode with perfect form as they dive up into the sky. because they were inverted.
I've already seen it. It was quite entertaining.
it IS a slow moving, depressing movie, with a few hilarious moments, but the dialogue and the craving for wine itself, makes this movie quite delectable and worthy of a view.
I'm game, catherine, if you don't mind waiting a few more days.
but of course! we can bring along a delicious three buck chuck.
maybe i'll bring you some from california... home of two buck chuck.
sure, sure, lord the one-dollar difference over me. jerk.
I must say, I was kind of indifferent. I think Payne's movies have been trending downward since Election (I haven't seen Citizen Ruth.) Sure, they're getting more pretentious and making art-house audiences look progressively more hip when they discuss them at the water cooler, but in terms of actual laughs, it's a pretty steep curve in the negative direction. I felt like Nicholson largely carried Schmidt, which is why I managed to like it so much despite it really being not all that hilarious, but Giamatti's schtick gets old quickly, especially if you've already seen American Splendor.
Well, I haven't seen American Splendor, but I did see him in the godawful Duets. So yeah... that's a strike against.
uh.... couple things,
1. having seen both american splendor and sideways, i can safely say that both are great, PG's stick does not in fact get old, and sideways has fucking lowell from wings in it. what the hell else could you ask for? go see it.
2. election fucking blows. can people stop talking like this movie is any good.
