buzzkill

well, last night was disappointing. i really thought the libertines sucked. i have no idea how they've gotten such an incredible amount of buzz. i swear to god, if you put a black, shaggy wig on me, make me lose 30 pounds, dress me in skinny black pants, dangle a cigarette out of my mouth, and teach me to play three chords on my guitar, the british music press would annoint me the Next Big Thing.

on the other hand, a band i do think was deserving of its earlier buzz, franz ferdinand, is officially a group of LOSERS: they're appearing in the next harry potter movie as a rock band made up of a bunch of witches called the wyrd sisters. in the movie, "harry potter and the goblet of fire" (which is my favorite thus far in the series) they'll be doing a gig at the hogwarts yule ball.

Well, that is a dissapointment in many, many respects. Not that I was ever more thn ambivalent towards FF, but that the Harry Potter empire has stooped to fairly blatant plagarism. "Wyrd Sisters" is the name of one of Terry Pratchett's [utterly, totally magnificently] brilliant Discworld books, about a group (Not! a coven) of witches.

if i remember correctly i'm pretty sure they're actually in the book and aren't just being added on for the movie, though i have no idea where jk rowling might have taken the name from.

I believe both take it from the witches in Macbeth. And actually, some googling reveals that Shakespear took it from norse, germanic, or celtic mythology (making me think the name's actual origins may predate all three cultures).

Weren't the Wyrd Sisters female in the Harry Potter book, or am I making that up? Are FF that intent on pushing forward their half-hearted gender-bending?

incidentally, I didn't intentionally omit that e. I'm not that pretentious.

i think they're female, but they're very hairy and ugly?...or something. also, FF is doing part of the HP soundtrack. i wasn't even aware HP movies had soundtracks.

i knew harry potter movies had scores out there, but i bet they realized they could make a lot more money with soundtracks. by losers, do you mean losers in a cool way, like that FF like dorky kids books? or actual losers, like they're just doing this for the money?

i can't really decide. i think actual losers. on one hand i think it's a little bit cool, then on the other hand, i'm like, "wait! it is SO NOT rock n roll to be in a hugely commerically successful kids movie!"

Posted by: catherine on October 20, 2004 01:52 PM

Well... the mere fact that children are interested in musicians who can play instruments is a success for popular music, regardless of how rock n roll it may or may not be. Would you rather the Wyrd Sisters be of the Duff, Simpson or Olsen persuasions?

okay, Jeff wins.

On a related note, I was really excited when I was on the Lawn at UVA last week, and the stupid frat-sponsored thing that was happening (bocce tournament?) had the Shins as its background music. Hey! things can get better!

Too bad we had to go through high school and college with gangsta, and then, even worse, conspicuous-consumption rap as the dominant form of pop music. Oh well.

haha, no, i don't want duff doing harry potter. i'd rather they just didn't have a cameo at all, i guess. though if they HAD to have one, FF isn't a terrible choice.

I feel like FF doing Harry Potter = validation for my HP love.

Please, Duff's not getting HP. It's Lindsay Lohan's all the way, and frankly we'd be better off if they'd bump that little English girl for the Mean Girl. Duff should consider herself blest if she picks up an extra in, uh, some lesser children's fantasy Hollywood engine.

and speaking of kids' movies and indie rock, the spongebob squarepants movie soundtrack is looking to be rocktastic. i checked out the shins and flaming lips songs over at stereogum and can't wait to hear more.
