five minutes to go
Two competent candidates equals a tie, and a tie, for once, goes to the incumbent. Blame lowered expectations, but the president did better than expected. That's all it takes. Particularly when the press is ready for whatever interpretation best sustains the narrative.
It's strange how much better the President has been on domestic issues. Kerry's got plenty of figures to throw around, but the central Republican domestic message -- that everything will work better if only we'd spend less money on it -- is an attractive one, and I'm not sure Kerry's been able to overcome it.
I'd say Kerry is in trouble. I hope I'm wrong -- I'm not exactly drooling on Catherine's shoulder, but I am, admittedly, violating the blogging prime directive. Still, I suspect that Bush will draw a narrow lead out of this debate.

Sadly, I have to agree with Tom. This was the only debate I got to see, since I was on call during the others (actually, I am on call tonight as well, but I just blatantly told my resident I was going to watch the debate), but Kerry really didn't impress me. Bush of course didn't either, but that's to be expected. I mean, what the hell was up with Kerry's deciding to reference McCain repeatedly? Who told him this would be a good strategy? And I agree that the mention of Cheney's daughter, especially when he stopped midsentence, looked into the camera, and stated in a just barely perceptibly lower than normal volume, "She's a lesbian" was the low point of the evening. I shudder to think of the potential celebration that will be going on down in Lynchburg on election night, while I'm cramped into the corner room of the nursing dorm attached to the hospital.
wow, i was really drunk last night.
