the incredible hulk takes the GRE
respond to this argument:
The University of Claria is generally considered one of the best universities in the world because of its instructors' reputation, which is based primarily on the extensive research and publishing record of certain faculty members. In addition, several faculty members are internationally renowned as leaders in their fields. For example, many of the faculty from the English department are regularly invited to teach at universities in other countries. Furthermore, two recent graduates of the physics department have gone on to become candidates for the Nobel Prize in Physics. And 75 percent of the students are able to find employment after graduating. Therefore, because of the reputation of its faculty, the University of Claria should be the obvious choice for anyone seeking a quality education.
the sample response that received a score of 1:
Is true that University of Claria is generally consider one of the best university in world. Because instructors reputations. Because research and publishing record. Because teach in other countries. Because win Nobel prizes. Because find empolyment after graduating. But other school good just as Claria. Can be little money. Can be good teachers too.

Catherine smash puny essay!
While the education available at University of Claria is probably respectable, some of the claims made in this argument are not watertight reasons to enroll.
Based on the information given in the article, it does seem that some of the faculty members (particularly from the English Department) are quite reputable. Many of the English teachers are so good that they are invited to teach at universities in other countries. If they are gone all the time to teach abroad, then they will not be available to their own home college's students.
Another quality of the school which is cited as evidence is the two graduate students who were nominated for the Nobel Prize in Physics. These could have just been very smart students, owing nothing to their teachers. Even if the teachers did play a vital role in their education, we have no idea whether those teachers are still at the school or if their classes are easy to enroll in.
Even if the teachers invited to teach abroad and the teachers of the Nobel prize nominees are as good as the article implies and they are able to teach a regular class schedule, this is still only a very small fraction of the total number of teachers, classes, and majors offered at the University.
Finally, the University of Claria's percentage of students employed after graduation does not give us sufficient information to regard it as a defense of the reputation of its faculty. We are not given any data regarding the quality of employment they were able to find. And in fact, is 75% even a good percentage?
In conclusion, the individual points made are subject to scutiny and the basic premise of the argument is flawed in that it assumes that prior records or a few well-credentialed teachers automatically create the best learning environment. There are many other factors which go into a quality education, including quality of facilities, teacher-to-student ratio, and cost, none of which are mentioned in the article.
