obama's my man
i'm going to do basically the same post i did yesterday, where i link to a post at pandagon (where they are doing as good of a job as making convention coverage as interesting as they can) and then say i have shivers up my spine, inspired by a democrat. who cares. i never said i was original.

oh. my. god. read the speech yourself. i wish i'd seen it on tv. oh dear god. i'm just reading the transcript, and i want to jump up and down in my office and yell and do a convention dance party to terrible baby boomer music.
Tonight, we gather to affirm the greatness of our nation not because of the height of our skyscrapers, or the power of our military, or the size of our economy; our pride is based on a very simple premise, summed up in a declaration made over two hundred years ago: "We hold these truths to be self-evident, that all men are created equal...... that they are endowed by their Creator with certain inalienable rights, that among these are life, liberty and the pursuit of happiness."
That is the true genius of America, a faith...
... a faith in simple dreams, an insistence on small miracles; that we can tuck in our children at night and know that they are fed and clothed and safe from harm; that we can say what we think, write what we think, without hearing a sudden knock on the door; that we can have an idea and start our own business without paying a bribe; that we can participate in the political process without fear of retribution; and that our votes will be counted -- or at least, most of the time.
This year, in this election, we are called to reaffirm our values and our commitments, to hold them against a hard reality and see how we are measuring up, to the legacy of our forbearers and the promise of future generations...
i'm gushing, too. but i can't help feeling excited for the upcoming election. i'm not a betting woman (and i'm all for keeping super low expectations on anything that matters to me). but the past few days have made me feel so hopeful. i just want it to last for the next three months.

i've never followed conventions. do they always elicit such euphoria from the base? or is this year's somehow different? according to the (few) comments i've seen, it appears that every speaker was better than the last, and if this convention is any indication, democrats should hold the white house for the next, oh, half a century at the least.
i imagine this is pretty standard at conventions...or are the dems really just that charged up?
well, all the other speakers last night, from what i've read, were pretty mediocre. just obama and clinton got me really excited for democratic prospects. i imagine it'll fade in the next couple of months, but hoo boy, obama was awesome.
i guess we'll see if the same thing happens at the republican convention.
but i'm saying edwards/obama 2012! if kerry wins and can hold on for 8 years, i feel somewhat certain that edwards could have a shot at it, and if obama ever gets up there...well, he's a great hope for the democrats right now for african americans. so my ultimate idealistic plan is: kerry eight years, edwards eight years, obama eight years. the next quarter of a century at least :)
But then what of Hillary?!
Speculation that far ahead is just a little silly. Someone will get caught sleeping with someone they shouldn't have, or spending money that wasn't theirs. A catastrophic world event no one could have foreseen will forever change the political landscape. The domestication of the dog will continue, unabated.
Point being, it's just way too hard to predict this stuff. Obama could get hit by a bus tomorrow.
i know. it is just part of my plan for ultimate world domination by democrats. WE WILL TAKE OVER!
also, if obama gets hit by a bus, it's OBVIOUSLY a republican conspiracy.
Catherine, if history is any indication, Obama won't get a primary leadership role in the Senate nor be a part of a presidential ticket. Unfortunately, the Democrats talk the talk, but don't walk the walk. I've been waiting for Harold Ford, whose talent I hold in even higher regard than Obama, to be allowed to flourish and represent the best of the party, but he was quashed by San-Francisco liberal Democrat Nancy Pelosi.
Think about it. Who do you think best represents your party's ideals? A Pelosi? ...or an Obama? I think Obama represents the ideal but Pelosi represents the reality.
I'd love to see an Obama or Ford presidency. The gentlemen both are true centrists and are known to be uniters. I just wish the rest of the party was like that.

I got to hear Obama's speech today at work. I admit, compelling stuff, especially once he hit his stride in the middle. Regardless of if it's a 24-year domination, the Dems at least have a promising future.
Scott, did this Ford guy ever have a moment in the spotlight such as this? I should probably go look him up.
And, you know, it's a shame that the Republicans disdained the leadership of Everyone's Favorite Conservative, John McCain, in the 2000 primaries, eh?
scott, who do you think best represents the republican party? do you actually believe it's arnold, or mccain, or any of the moderates that happen to be speaking at the convention?
Catherine, Matty: I'm not saying the Republicans are any better at it. And this is the Democrats' week, they'll be plenty of time to dissemble the Republicans "makeover" at their convention. --s
true, true. i personally am not a fan of pelosi, so maybe all the young people singing obama's praises these days can actually help shape the party now that they're becoming more politically active.
