exceptional circumstances

WAMU is doing a show right now on a local DC music festival that'll be going on this weekend. Fine. But they're featuring an acapella group called Almost Recess. They just played their rendition of "My Girl".

This question has been gnawing at me since I was back at UVA: why do we waste dollars and lives throwing people in jail for nonviolent drug offenses, yet allow acapella performers to walk the streets freely? In all of my recent idealistic, dreamy-eyed liberal pontificating about how no exigency could possibly justify torture, I somehow forgot about human beatboxing. I guess it's time to grow up.

exceptions will be made for Rahzel, of course

You just never heard it done right...

I think Rahzel is clearly the only man in recorded history who can do it "right".

Scott, I'll admit that most acapella music is relatively harmless. UVA boasted at least a dozen acapella groups -- I heard an awful lot more instrument-free renditions of "Ants Marching" than I would have liked, but no harm done.

But I have seen video of acapella competitions. I have seen -- and, god help me, heard -- people perform Jimi Hendrix songs, emulating his guitar with their voices. Clearly, this will not stand. It's too slippery a slope.

In my opinion, the best that acapella music can only make you want to hear the original song. Most acapella music just makes me want to beat myself in the head.
