sabbath rocks

For some reason, rock n roll's pagan energies seem to peak in DC on Sunday evenings. Don't ask me why, but the bands I want to see all seem to play this town when they know we'll be getting up for work the next day. Probably there is some sort of congressionally mandated scheduling ordinance to make sure that nobody in this city has too much fun. But although you might not get to pair ringing ears with the traditional hangover, when the quality of the band is sufficiently high it's tough to get too upset.

This weekend is a great example of this. As we've noted before, The Unicorns are playing the Black Cat, and you're all going. It's only $10, and despite recent Pitchfork rumors about touring fatigue, I'm confident that it'll be worth every penny. They are, after all, more than horses.

But you already knew all that. The new, exciting news (which is new), is that Travis Morrison, formerly of the Dismemberment Plan is going to be playing a solo show at the Galaxy Hut on Sunday, July 4. I was a late convert to the D-Plan; the only live show I ever saw was their last one, at the 9:30 club, but it made every bit of the recorded D-Plan music I had heard suddenly click. Even if you don't like the music on their CDs (or streamed from their website), you ought to see the Dismemberment Plan live -- or what's left of them. Morrison, their ex-frontman, is an extremely interesting musician, and an intimate hometown venue like the GH is sure to spur Arlington-boy Travis to an interesting show.

Of course, the date and the size of the GH might make this a little tough -- but don't worry, we can get there early, enjoy some beers, and maybe even fit the requisite pyrotechnics into the evening's agenda somewhere. And did I mention that GH shows are always free, with no cover? You really shouldn't miss this.

But if you have to, there's always Fort Reno. I've got a sneaking suspicion that Morrison -- or maybe even the Dismemberment Plan themselves -- will be playing one or more dates this summer. Like the GH and all of the other best things in life, it's also free.

And yes, it's official: I can no longer like anything unless it has a hyperlink with which it can be associated.
