back
got back from the beach around noon, after having woken up at 5:30am so tommy could make it back to arlington in time to work a half day. it was very very good. drinks were drunk, meat was grilled, hot tub was enjoyed, dead dolphins were poked, etc. (though in matt's defense about the whole poking dolphins thing, the park ranger was kind of an ass who tried to scare us with great white shark stories. matt barely poked the dolphin; it wasn't like he was stabbing it repeatedly with the stick until it burst with dolphin corpse innards. he just gently tapped the sand under the dolphin and was very mild-mannered when the dude yelled at him.) but then, not in matt yglesias's defense, he has this post about confederate flags down south where he says: "Down South, naturally enough, one sees more Confederate flag bumpers stickers than are evident in my more habitual environs (New York, Cambridge, Washington, Maine, Europe...I'm quite the liberal elitist) and they were often paired with exhortions to "support the troops" or some other such thing. This brought to mind something that I always think is strangely neglected in the on-again-off-again Stars and Bars debate in this country, to wit: the Confederate flag is a flag of rebellion against the United States of America and thus an odd symbol for the erstwhile uberpatriots of Dixie."
regardless of what the flag represents, blah blah...i'm pretty sure the only confederate flag we saw while down there was on a WIND SOCK in a kitchsy tourist store. i never saw any bumper stickers or houses flying the flag (which i don't find that strange, seeing as we were in the outer banks, which i think is basically filled with well-to-do people from north of n.c. visiting their beach houses), and i certainly never saw any paired with exhortions to support the troops or anything else. maybe i missed a few that matt saw. but it definitely wasn't like the outer banks in north carolina was swathed with confederate flags everywhere you looked.
anyway. lots of pictures were taken! so i'll post them sooner or later.

Ha, well, Matt's commentary is based on a handful of pick-up trucks we saw on the drive back. More on the mainland than on the Outer Banks themselves, it's true.
Looking forward to the photos!
well that makes more sense. but on the way there and the way up, i didn't see a single flag. i did think i'd see at least one.
Yeah, I also didn't see any good ol' boys with sleeveless plaid shirts as I was promised. Very disappointing.
you missed the dolphin guy, then. he was wearing a sleeveless harley biker shirt and cut off denims. he really was a jerk to matt, unnecessarily, i thought. i think he was just jealous cause matt came to poke the dolphin with a bunch of girls in bikinis.
If you had ventured one state further south, than matt's statement holds true. The Outer Banks is not considered the south...neither is Virginia Beach.
