hmm.
i just signed myself up for the lottery for the marine corps marathon in october. why, i cannot exactly say, but i suppose i'm trying to tempt fate in some sort of bizarre way. i'm counting on god letting me know that i'm really, really not meant to be running 26.2 miles in my lifetime by not letting me get picked. we'll see. i mean, if god WANTS me to run a marathon, what am i supposed to do? i guess i'll have to. if god says so.
anyway, i'm still running the race for the cure 5k june 5th, the lawyers have hearts 10k june 12th (not cause i think lawyers have hearts, but cause it's the next 10k in the d.c. area), and the rock n roll half marathon in virginia beach labor day weekend. if you suffer a sudden change of heart and decide you want to run any of this stuff with me, please do. running is always more fun with a buddy. otherwise it's just me and my lonely ipod.
update: speaking of my lonely ipod, that brings me to another subject. songs that are good to run/exercise to! what are they? usually i do a lot of blur, pulp -- surprisingly, "angels of silences" by the counting crows is a super good running song -- but i need more songs. so i can eventually create the ULTIMATE RUNNING PLAYLIST.
qualities for good running songs include: consistently upbeat tempo (obviously), loud drums, maybe some anger and/or girl power anthems that simultaneously make me want to run and kick some male loser's ass. i'm okay with going outside my usual musical tastes, as well--for example, if you've got a white snake song that makes you want to kickbox or something, let me know. i mean, i love music, but the stuff i ordinarily listen to...ie, belle&sebastian, pavement, wilco...they're just not exactly exercise-inspiring (though, actually, a few wilco songs are pretty good to run to).
anyway. let me have song suggestions. per favore.

I want to run with you! But I'm scared of cicadas.
About damn time you signed up to run the MCM!!! :-) I'll be there cheering you on if you make the lottery!
becca, you best be all better by the time the rnr half comes around, or i don't know what the hell i'm going to do, running without you.
kriston, it's easy! we'll be moving too fast for the cicadas.
if you can get yourself to run 3 or 4 miles without dying, you would be set to do a 10k.
running sucks, so i don't know, how about johnny cash's cover of "hurt."
i just realized that i basically have no shot at being picked, because there is only one more lottery drawing before the whole thing closes. so unless i get picked next week, i'm out. boo. or yay. whatever.
Exactly. Maybe a recording of my enemies chasing me. That might get me to run.
(I meant exactly to "Hurt," not to whatever Catherine's talking about. Let's play Mario Party instead.)
maybe instead of a recording, just having your enemies chase you. that'd work pretty well.
oh and i totally plan on buying a t-shirt from http://www.runagainstbush.org/ to wear
It should say "Run From Bush." Though were he the enemy chasing me I'd probably take my chances.
Some running songs that I've been enjoying recently -- not all at once, of course. Might be time to make a mix CD, although sometimes when I fill up a CD with uptempo pop for workouts my brain feels exhausted by the end.
You've already heard basically all of these, but maybe it'll spur you to use some at the gym that you wouldn't have otherwise.
Modest Mouse - Float On
Non Prophets - Damage
Unicorns - Les Os
Walkmen - The Rat
Pedro the Lion - Rapture
Cursive - Red Handed Slight Of Hand; also, Art Is Hard
Everclear - Twistinside, any of the singles from the first or second major label album
Q & Not U - Soft Pyramids
And of course, you can never go wrong with what are maybe the most consistent workout albums ever: Weezer's blue album, or either New Pornographers album.
The Ramones!
I'll offer The Refused. Either "New Noise" or "Worms of the Senses." (Sample lyrics: "I've got a bone to pick with capitalism / And a few to break.") Refuel with the power of anti-.
I listen to Scotty's New Year's Eve cds, which you are more than welcome to borrow whenever. They consist of hip-hop and well, more hip-hop....but it definitely keeps me moving. I also like running to Weezer, Maroon5 (the "I hate relationships" cd), and Red Hot Chili Peppers.
Good luck getting in! I still want people cheering for ME if you doesn't get in though!
umm..if you don't get in...sorry my grammar bad.
I don't exercise at all, but Andrew WK has to be good to work out to.
andrew wk, definitely. i really do get into weird music when i'm running. like, i bet i could do a decent run to crap like linkin park and audioslave. or something that would make you want to, like, mosh. it's basically got to have anger at its core. anger=good run.
Being the fitness guru that I am, I have a few suggestions for you re: running music. These songs can get me pretty pumped --
Tool -- "jerk-off" (live)
Deftones -- my own summer (shove it) & be quiet and drive
Eminem -- Rabbit Run
NOFX -- the irrationality of rationality (dumb name, I know, but it's a really good song!)
Taking Back Sunday -- Cute Without the "E" (not as angry as the others, but still good for exercise purposes)
You could go with an actual running theme:
The Runner-Manfred Mann
Runnin' with the Devil-Van Halen
I Ran-A Flock of Seagulls
The Distance-Cake
Race of Doom-Devo
Strange Pursuit-Devo
He's a Runner-Claire Martin
The Loneliness of the Long Distance Runner-Iron Maiden (or September 67)
Running on Empty-Jackson Browne
The Long Race-Bruce Hornsby
Running-No Doubt
She's a Runner-Billy Squier
Marathon-Kelis
Running with the Night-Lionel Richie
:-D
You can't NOT get goosebumps when you're crankin' St. Elmo's Fire, especially at the end of a long run, or when you're really burning through a speed session and its hurting. This one helped me with marathon training--helped me to visualize the finish.
Try it!
