yay!
hoorah hooray, i bought a camera today!
i actually didn't go with any of the digital cameras i listed previously; tommy alerted me this morning to a deal via bensbargains.net where you could buy the canon s410 powershot or whatever it's called for only $309, including shipping. i figured, what the hell, to someone like me, most digital cameras are more or less the same, and this one has 4.0 megapixels, and something to do with CCDs (which justin said was good) and lots of other nifty confusing features, and it's SO CUTE AND TINY. which is the most important part of a camera to a girl. take a look:

now. can someone tell me what kind of memory card i should buy?
i hate to sound so stupid, but when it comes to digital cameras, i am basically the equivalent of a damsel in distress in a tower waving around some sort of hanky.

I should clarify. For low light, you want the largest CCD by area (rather than resolution). I'm not sure how much that varies among consumer cameras. You've found a good deal, but I also recommend the Casio Z4U. Thin is in, smaller is sexier, and a 2" LCD doesn't hurt.
The S410 uses a CompactFlash type card. I've seen speed complaints for some manufacturers. SanDisk Ultras and the like guarantee transfer speeds (allowing faster sequential pictures), but I don't have experience with them. I am tempted by their Extreme version merely because it reminds me of Surge.
I will try to not get too technical, but put in layman's terms the difference is 90*.
Also, the camera takes compactflash type I cards. There's a review of different brands at http://www.dpreview.com/articles/mediacompare/ that's dated but provides decent side-by-side comparisons of the major brands. This roundup (http://www.robgalbraith.com/bins/multi_page.asp?cid=6007) is more up-to-date, but it compares write speeds by camera and the s400/410 isn't included. But use the dropdown at the top to select a couple of canon cameras and compare write speeds; higher is better of course. Try to figure out what the worst brands are. Then go to fatwallet.com, then the "hot deals" forum, then search for "compact flash" or "CF" and avoid the previously identified lousy brands.

um. just tell me which one to buy. no options.
well, in that case I'd go with Justin's suggestion about the surge/extreme thing. It's hard to argue with the mighty weight of a soft-drink advertising campaign, even if you're actually buying consumer electronics, not soda.
