I don't know what to think about Cracking Up. Jason Schwartzman? Check. Some guy who worked on School of Rock? Check. "Shooter" from Happy Gilmore? Uh, ok. Molly Shannon? Hang on a sec.

Honestly, she wasn't even the problem. The whole show had a factory-fresh, manufactured quality to it. Like the creators had carefully studied how to make a quirky, laughtrack-free alterna-sitcom then did their best to follow that algorithm -- instead of just using the tried and true 1. be funny 2. repeat.

Maybe it was just the shock of seeing an affluent California lifestyle at 9 on a Wednesday without it being prefaced by the strains of "Californiaaa... Californnnnyaaaaa". We were treated to a band member, though, so I don't think that's it. The show just seemed contrived and not very funny. You could practically hear the gears in the writers' heads laboriously grinding away as the weak setup lurched toward what the creators probably thought was a frantically paced comic finale.

On the other hand, Jack Black is showing up as a guest star next week, so I don't know if it's quite time for a final judgment. His lame bit at the Video Music Awards aside, I've never seen him do anything unfunny.
