the colorado football coach is something of an idiot. to be sure, i know nothing about football, nor would i ever want to play on a football team, and i have no idea of the protocol surrounding a college athletic team.
but that guy is a huge dumbass. all i know is that i saw a clip of him on the today show, admist allegations of a female player having been raped, saying over and over again that the female player in question was "let's face, it she was terrible. she couldn't get a ball between the two poles. really awful. etc." that quote is approximated, but that's basically exactly what he said.
what in the world is going through your mind at a time like that to say things of that nature? a female player has probably been sexually assaulted under your watch, not to mention several other women. and you're going to be on national TV. and you slam the girl in question. he also went on record as saying he knew of no one who would support her claim.
thank god he was placed on administrative leave. from what i saw of this man, i wouldn't be surprised if he helped cultivate the environment in which these assaults took place.
oh, i see the exact quote now: Asked why she left Colorado after the 1999 season, he said, "It was obvious Katie was not very good. She was awful."
"Katie was not only a girl, she was terrible. OK? There's no other way to say it."
nice.

yeah, this guy is an idiot. PR 101: don't insult rape victims. I have a feeling he was thinking something along the lines of "Oh God, more trouble from this girl." That's not an excuse for his boneheaded behavior, just the only explanation I can think of.
I have a feeling this idiot soundbite will somehow result in him being implicated in establishing a culture of permissiveness in which rape could occur. And that's probably unfortunate, because I seriously doubt he really had anything to do with it happening or not happening.
I agree that the coach is an idiot, but he's right about one thing. I saw her attempt an extra point in New Mexico's bowl game. It got about 3 feet off the ground. She is a terrible kicker.
In other "female placekicking news", an Ohio State cheerleader successfully kicked an extra point (unopposed) at halftime of the 2003 Fiesta Bowl. Or maybe it was during the Michigan game. I'll go away now.
i wouldn't be surprised if he did have something to do with the culture. i mean, this isn't the first time CU has been in the news for something like this.
"The accusations involving the football program that have surfaced over the past three weeks stem from civil lawsuits filed by three women against the school. They said they were raped by players or recruits at or after an off-campus party in December 2001.
An adult entertainment company said CU players regularly hired strippers for recruiting parties, and the university acknowledged that an escort service was called from a cell phone that had been assigned to a former football recruiting aide.
No assault charges have been filed in those cases, but Boulder County prosecutor Mary Keenan said in a deposition for one of the lawsuits that she believes the football program uses alcohol and sex to entice recruits."
i mean, if this sort of stuff is going on, i'm sure he at least knew about it and implicitly condoned it, if not helped it to happen.
i don't know if this is any different or not from other college football programs.
yeah, I officially retract what I said. To quote Jeffrey Lebowski, "new shit has come to light." Looks like he tried to intimidate her into retracting her statement, according to a police report that became available early this morning. He's been suspended. Sounds like he's a genuine scumbag, not just a coach with poor media skills.
