alitalia is starting up a direct flight from d.c. to milan, amongst other italian cities, and is having a spring sale. tickets cost $380, and with taxes, it comes to a flight for under $500. not too shabby!

you should go! it can be done pretty cheaply, overall, obviously if you stay in youth hostels and the like.
