second batch of rome
here are the rest of the pictures from the roman holiday. as i like to call it. becauase that movie is awesome.

this is an artsy fartsy b&w photo of the ceiling of the pantheon. it's really the only one of my photos of the pantheon that turned out, because the building is so massive it wouldn't fit in my lens.

here's a random street corner in rome. just thought it was pretty.

this is the cirucs maximus, or rather, the spot where the circus maximus used to be. it was basically an enormous arena for chariot racing, and could hold up to something like 300,000 people? chariot racing was apparently far more popular than gladiator-ing, because the noble people considered gladiator stuff beneath them, while chariot racing was something everyone enjoyed. also, did you know arena is the latin word for sand? it was used in respect to the colosseum because the wooden floor of the colosseum was often covered with sand to prevent slippage and to soak up blood. massimo, my colosseum tour guide, was just full of these sorts of nuggets.

this is some fire guy/street performer we saw while wandering around one night after dinner. i had drank a lot of chianti, so i can't really remember exactly, but i think he also made balloon animals.

this is a picture of part of the borghese parks we wandered through. the park is acres and acres of really beautiful sculpture gardens and landscaped areas. i am, by the way, in love with these trees. can anyone identify them? anyway, it was all created by this borghese guy, who i think was a cardinal, and he also built a home in this park, which now houses one of the most extensive sculpture/portrait collections in rome and perhaps all of italy? lots of bernini sculptures.

this is a little lake in the same park. i just liked the old man rowing past the faux-temple.

ecco trevi fountain. it's big. i wish we'd seen it at night, but alas we only crammed it in to our last morning in rome, after the stupid sistine chapel turned out to be closed again.

eccomi in front of trevi fountain. what i'm wearing, by the way, is my kick ass florence leather jacket.

this is as i've eloquently titled, some temple in rome. pretty, no?

here's tommy in front of the bocca della verita'. that means the mouth of truth. if you've ever seen roman holiday (or "only you" for that matter), it's featured in that. legend has it that if you put your hand in there while telling a lie, it will bite it off. tommy's hand remained intact. anyway, supposedly this stone was an old roman drain covering. now a church is built around it.

this is inside the aforementioned church, santa maria di cosemdin. i believe it's one of the oldest churches in rome, and this is a beautiful mosaic inside of it. that was pretty much the last thing we saw in rome before taking the wonderful eurostar back to milano. in short, rome is good. you should go.
